We understand how difficult it is to fit everything you want to do into a trip. Or even to know where to start with planning. Sometimes, you want to go with the flow, not follow an itinerary but follow your heart. Sometimes you want to plan every last detail. Whichever way you travel, volunteer placements can often be seen as a commitment preventing you from seeing other places and having varied experiences during your trip. They can sometimes take away the spontaneity of discovering somewhere new.
There is a great deal of controversy surrounding short term placements however, we believe that if someone wants to volunteer their time, there is always someone who will benefit and a way to make that happen. Due to the short term nature of these opportunities and although Global Handprints does provide an induction, they are ideal for people who are familiar with South Africa and have some level of understanding of the cultural differences and ways in which culture shock can present.
We have partnered with locally established and run projects in Overstrand, a municipality located just outside of Cape Town, to enable our volunteers to take on a flexible volunteer opportunity. Whether you’re backpacking your way through Africa and find yourself in the Western Cape and want to spend some time doing good; whether you are heading to Cape Town specifically and want to get involved in the community in between all the tourist activity options, we have the answer. Our flexible placements can fit into any itinerary, they can be organized at the last minute (within reason) and are located in one of the most beautiful parts of the country!
We are specifically working with projects that run continuously therefore, our volunteer’s input is to lend an extra helping hand, bringing their experience and skills with them. These projects run day in day out, what you as a volunteer are offering is extra support enabling them to focus on the nitty gritty that needs doing. This isn’t necessarily glamorous, fast impacting work but its necessary and by getting involved you will be taking some pressure of the full time staff who go above and beyond to make sure everything gets done. Although you may not be able to see the long term difference you have made in just a few days, you will be leaving your mark on the project and how they achieve their overall aims.
